Margaret Garner Archaeological Project

Joanne Caputo revealed the location of “Maplewood” – Margaret’s enslaved home – to the Ohio press in 1998. News reports led to a 10-day preliminary archaeological dig by Kentucky State University (Anne Butler, Ph.D.) and the University of Kentucky (Kim Mc Bride, Ph.D.). Maplewood was subsequently listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A full-scale excavation has been postponed until funding is available. Contributions in any amount are welcome and can be sent to:    University of Kentucky/Margaret Garner Excavation
